Verify A License

How to Verify a Contractor is Licensed and has “Qualified Parties” … that is certified Journeyman for the State of New Mexico

  1. To check if a contractor is licensed to do work in the state of New Mexico go to the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department website: https://www.rld.nm.gov
  2. Click on "Verify a license"... you will be sent to https://www.rld.nm.gov/about-us/public-information-hub/online-services/
  3. Then click on Construction Industries Division... then click on Verify a License... you will be brought to... https://public.psiexams.com/index_login.jsp

From here you can verify if an electrician, general contractor, HVAC company, plumber, gas fitter is licensed to do the work they say they are licensed to do AND if a contractor has any "qualified parties" to do the work you want done. Each company should have at least one qualified party journeyman in the trade craft you want who is qualified to do work or to supervise/oversee work being done.

To verify a contractor is legal you will need the official name of the company or their license number.

For Roadrunner Air Conditioning Heating & Refrigeration our license number is 367021.

To verify if a skilled tradesman has a journeyman card to do the work you will need the person’s name spelled correctly.

“Derek Cunningham” is the name of the qualified party and journeyman for Roadrunner Air.

The approved contractor licenses for mechanical and plumbing contractors for New Mexico are:

  • NM MM-1 (Master mechanical for plumbing) business license
  • NM MM-2 (master mechanical for natural gas fitting) business license
  • NM MM-3 (master mechanical for heat, vent and air conditioning)) business license
  • NM MM-4 (master mechanical license for heat, cooling, and process pipe) business license
  • NM MM-98 (covers MM-1 to MM-4) Master mechanical full license
  • NM LP04 –limited installation, service, repair liquid propane license (there are other more detailed LP licenses that involve dispensing LP to tanks, replacing LP tanks, etc that aren’t required for repairing/servicing installing propane gas furnaces, boilers and water heaters. This LP4 license focuses on plumbing/HVAC installs, service and repair work authorization)
  • NM LP-6 focuses on propane for manufactured homes (repair service/installing)
  • NM LP-5 covers both LP04 and LP06.

Work can be done by a trade person called an "apprentice" who isn't a journeyman as long as they have a licensed journeyman they work under and who oversees their work.

The approved plumbing and mechanical journeyman cards that a company/contractor should have a “qualified party” are:

  • NM JP= Journeyman Plumber
  • NM JG=Journeyman Gas Fitter
  • NM JPG=Journeyman Plumbing & Gas Fitter (combined plumber and gas fitter card)
  • NM JPF=Journeyman Pipe Fitter
  • NM JR= Journeyman Refrigeration

  • NM JM MS-12=Fire Protection Systems
  • NM JM MS-14= Dry Chemical Fire Protection
  • NM BO1=Journeyman Boiler Operator (Residential)
  • NM BO2=Journeyman Boiler Operator (Residential and Commercial)

PLEASE NOTE TO BE CRYSTAL CLEAR: IF A PERSON HAS A JOURNEYMAN CARD BUT DOES NOT HAVE A MECHANICAL LICENSE (MM-1, MM2, MM3 OR MM4 OR THE MM98, THAT PERSON DOES NOT HAVE A “CONTRACTOR” LICENSE TO DO WORK LAWFULLY IN NEW MEXICO EVEN IF THEY MAY HAVE CORPORATION OR LLC “BUSINESS” LICENSE FROM THE NEW MEXICO SECRETARY OF STATE. Registering a business with the New Mexico Secretary of State is the first step to becoming a company in New Mexico. To become a licensed contractor in the skilled trade crafts like electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, gas piping, refrigeration a company can only become a licensed contractor through the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department.

All licensed contractors must be bonded to maintain their license and are checked by CID that their bond is current (New Mexico Construction Industries Division through their designated quality licensing service… PSI)

Legitimate licensed contractors are bonded, licensed and insured.

Proof of general liability insurance, workman’s compensation insurance and commercial auto insurance coverage is the right of every home owner and commercial business to request at any time work is being done or before work is started.

Failure to verify proper workman’s compensation insurance and general liability could result in the homeowner being at risk to pay medical expenses If a worker is hurt on your property.
