What is a Swamp Cooler?

A swamp cooler, or evaporative cooler as such systems are also known as, is a great alternative to a traditional air conditioning system. Rather than using chemicals such as refrigerant to facilitate the cooling of your home, a swamp cooler depends upon the natural phenomenon of evaporation in order to do so. An added bonus of this method of cooling is the fact that a swamp cooler can also add some much needed humidity to your home.

Swamp coolers depend upon a motor to pump water into the system, which is absorbed by a substance called cellulose. This absorbent pad is always kept moist in such a fashion. Another motor powers a fan, which blows fresh air over this pad. This air is very hot and dry when it enters the system, causing some of the water in the pad to evaporate into it. This evaporative process requires heat for completion, which in turn cools the air while adding humidity. This cooled, humidified air is then distributed throughout the household via ductwork.

In addition to cooling your air, then, an evaporative cooler can also help to keep the air in your home fresh and sufficiently humidified. Air is not constantly redistributed, as with a standard air conditioning system, so it is not as such a high risk of drying out. They also use less energy, so a swamp cooler allows you to cool your home in a more efficient, affordable manner than other systems may allow for.
