Plumbing Trouble: Signs That It Is Time to Call in a Pro

water running down into a drainSome plumbing problems are obvious. For instance, maybe you have a clogged drain in the bathroom and water is backing up. In the best case scenario, you can fix it on your own with nothing more than a plunger and a little bit of “elbow grease.”

Other plumbing issues, however, are not so obvious and require a professional plumber in Los Alamos, NM with the right tools and equipment in order to detect. That’s not to say you can’t watch out for signs that something is amiss with your plumbing system. Keep reading to learn more about these signs.

Decreased Water Pressure

A sudden drop in water pressure is never a good sign—unless maybe it’s due to your city doing work on the main water lines. In the absence of this, however, a drop in water pressure could mean a number of things. Usually, it means that you either have a leak or a blockage somewhere within the system.

A slow loss of water pressure over time indicates a growing leak or blockage, such as with lime scale. A sudden decline in pressure, on the other hand, could indicate a pipe rupture. Regardless of whether it’s slow or not, it’s a good idea to call a plumber!

Unnaturally High Water Bills

You should always keep a watch on your water bills from month to month, in case they begin to rise for no apparent reason. If your water bills seem to be rising beyond what’s normal for the amount of water that you use, then you could have a leak somewhere in the system.

Running Water Meter

One pretty easy way to see if your plumbing system is leaking is to turn off all the plumbing appliances in your home and then take a look at your water meter. If the meter is still running despite no water being on, it means you have a leak. Be sure to call your plumber the moment you notice this is happening.

Indications of Water Damage

Although you can reduce your risk by scheduling regular plumbing maintenance, there is a chance that you’ll run into some type of plumbing problem during your homeownership. Unfortunately, many of them only become noticeable once they’ve already begun to inflict damage.

Pinhole leaks, for instance, are often found only after they’ve rotted out the surrounding area with water damage. If you notice any signs of water damage on your walls or ceiling, it’s a good idea to call in a professional plumber to check on it as soon as you can. The longer you wait, the worse your plumbing problem may get.

As is always the case with any home performance issue, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Be sure to call a professional as soon as you have reason to suspect that something is amiss with your plumbing system. The faster we can get to your issue and repair it, the better off your home will be.
