Ductless systems, also referred to as ductless mini-splits, are increasing in popularity due to their reputation for being extremely energy efficient. But that doesn’t mean there’s not more you can do to increase your ductless efficiency. Increasing your home efficiency is good for many reasons: it reduces the negative impact your home has on the environment, plus it saves you money in the long run.
Aside from scheduling Los Alamos, NM ductless installation services, what can you do as a homeowner to increase your home’s efficiency, and how can you use your ductless heating system as efficiently as possible?
Ensure It Is Sized Correctly
Ensuring the efficiency of your ductless system starts at installation. Any HVAC system that is too small for the home in which it is installed will not be able to effectively or efficiently condition that home. On that same note, too large of a heat pump will present challenges, too. It will go through a process called short-cycling, where it rapidly turns on and off because it’s reaching your desired temperature too quickly.
This may not sound like that severe of a problem, but it is detrimental to the efficiency of your ductless system. Short-cycling causes components to wear down and break down faster than they would otherwise, and force your heating system to work harder than it should have in order to complete its job.
Use Your Ceiling Fan
You may be wondering why we’re mentioning ceiling fans in the middle of winter—even if our winters don’t get as bitterly cold as other parts of the country. What many homeowners don’t realize is that ceiling fans can be used this time of year to increase heating efficiency!
Take a look at your ceiling fan. There should be a switch located just above the blades. This switch reverses the direction that the blades go in, pushing warm air down instead of cooler air. While this will not increase the temperature of your living space, it will make you feel warmer, and therefore you can turn the temperature of your ductless heater down a bit, allowing it to work less hard to do its job and increasing its efficiency.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Maintenance allows our technicians to fully inspect and clean your ductless system. A heater can only work effectively when it’s well taken care of, and professional maintenance is part of this. In addition to inspecting and cleaning, we’ll also make any necessary adjustments to loose components, and make recommendations for repairs, if needed. Staying on top of your ductless heating services can only help improve system efficiency.
It is important to remember that while a furnace or a traditional central air conditioner may only need once a year maintenance, you should schedule your ductless system maintenance twice a year since it is a two-in-one system that you use all year round and not just for one season at a time.
