Cooling Efficiency: Should You Go Ductless This Year?

Summertime is well on its way, and soon it will be time to use our air conditioners on a daily and even hourly basis. If you’re not sure whether or not your air conditioner is ready for the task of keeping you cool all season long, it might be a good idea to consider replacement now.

You have many options to choose from! Each option has their own pros and cons, which will vary depending on where in New Mexico you’re located and how your home is setup. For many homes in our area though, a Mitsubishi ductless system is a fantastic choice.

What Makes a Ductless System Unique?

A ductless cooling and heating system, as the name implies, does not use air ducts to circulate air throughout your living space. Rather, it uses individual air handlers installed in rooms throughout your home. Each air handler is responsible for cooling or heating only the room in which it’s installed, with up to found indoor air handlers connected to a single outdoor unit. Additionally, each air handler has its own thermostat, enabling it to function independently from the rest of the air handlers.

Like all heat pump systems, and as we just alluded to, ductless systems can function as both heaters or air conditioners.

There is a bit of construction work involved with the installation of a ductless system. Nothing major, but small holes need to be drilled into the walls where the air handlers are installed to run a conduit that contains the power cord, refrigerant, and condensate drain. This setup makes the installation cost a little higher than a traditional central air conditioner, but the month-to-month savings you’ll see will make up for this.

The Benefits of Going Ductless

Ductless systems, also called ductless mini-splits, have a number of benefits that other systems can’t boast, including (but not limited to):

  • Better Efficiency: Ductless systems are much more energy efficient than other systems like central air conditioners (or furnaces). They don’t have to worry about ductwork leaks, first of all, which are responsible for energy loss of up to 30%. It’s a significant thing to be able to avoid this problem altogether! Additionally, what makes them so efficient in heating mode is that instead of burning some type of fuel to generate heat, they are transferring heat, through the refrigerant process. If you want to increase your home’s energy efficiency without giving up your comfort, then a ductless system can be a great choice!
  • Versatile: Have you ever had an argument with a family member over what thermostat setting to use for your cooling or heating needs? With a ductless system, you don’t have to worry about this! As we mentioned above, ductless air handers each have their own thermostat, so you can set the ideal temperature for the room you’re in without bothering anyone else in the household. Modifying the output like this also prevents hot and cold spots from occurring, which is a common problem for central air conditioners and heaters.
