Why You Should Consider a Ductless Mini Split for Your Air Conditioning

Many homeowners utilize centralized air conditioners to keep their homes cool during the warm seasons. It’s not hard to understand why. Centralized air conditioning systems are an easy and effective way to cool a home. However, they are not perfect systems. There are a number of disadvantages associated with centralized air conditioners, including energy inefficiency and uneven cooling. Fortunately, there are systems that solve for these disadvantages: ductless mini splits. Read on to find out what a ductless mini split system is, and why you should consider using one to cool your home.

What is a Ductless Mini Split?

A ductless mini split is a heat pump system comprised of at least two parts. The outdoor unit is, obviously, installed outside of the house. Meanwhile, the indoor unit is installed on the wall or ceiling of the room that it is going to be serving. Ductless mini splits must be installed inside individual rooms, seeing as how they don’t use ducts to transport air between rooms. Fortunately, though, up to four indoor units can share a single outdoor unit. This makes it easier to equip the entire house without cluttering it with too much machinery.

What are the Benefits of Using a Ductless Mini Split?

The US Department of Energy estimates that up to 30% of an average forced air system’s output is lost to leaks in the home’s ductwork. Central air conditioning systems are part of this statistic, and commonly waste a lot of energy trying to compensate for the massive loss. As ductless systems don’t make use of ducts, they don’t have to worry about duct leaks. This makes them far more energy efficient.

Ductless mini splits also provide a level of control that central air conditioning systems do not allow. Each indoor ductless unit has its own thermostat, allowing it to set its own temperature for that room. This allows each member of your household to set his or her own preferences for his or her room. It also prevents cool air from being wasted on empty rooms.
