Tips for Boosting AC Efficiency This Summer

vent-low-on-wall

The summer months are soon upon us, which means more time outdoors enjoying the warmth and long hot days. It also means that we’ll be cranking up our AC unit in our homes or offices a lot more to combat the heat.

In this article, we offer a few handy tips on how you can boost the efficiency of your AC this summer.

1. Schedule maintenance

First up, you need to make sure your AC is well maintained by professionals. This means scheduling regular maintenance check-ups and tune-ups as recommended by the manufacturer.

Ideally, you should service your AC twice a year, once in the fall and once in the springtime. By doing so, you’ll make sure that all its parts are working, there are no risks of failure when you need it most, and that it is clean.

2. Set Your Thermostat at a Reasonable Temperature

You might be inclined to blast the AC when it’s hot outside, but this is actually a huge mistake. Yes, you want to be cool and comfortable indoors, but setting your thermostat too low will put unnecessary strain on your unit.

Instead, find a happy medium by setting your thermostat to around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature that is most recommended by energy experts as it will help keep your home cool without putting too much strain on your AC.

That way, you’ll ensure a temperature that is well maintained without putting your AC at risk of overworking, and failing as a result.

3. Use Ceiling Fans

Another great way to boost the efficiency of your AC this summer is by using ceiling fans in conjunction with it. When used together, ceiling fans can help circulate the air in your home and make it feel cooler without having to lower the temperature on your thermostat.

The two complement each other nicely, so if you have a fan in your living areas, make sure to turn them on while your AC is running.

4. Keep Windows and Blinds on South-Facing Windows Closed

If you have windows that face south, then it’s important to keep them closed during the hottest hours of the day. The sun’s rays can heat up your home quickly, so by keeping the blinds or curtains drawn, you can help keep things cooler indoors.

You obviously want to keep the cool air in and warm air out, so make sure all your windows in your home are closed while you are running the AC. If there are windows open, then not only are you letting warm air in but you are also making your AC work much harder to regulate the temperature.

5. Change Your Filter Regularly

Last but not least, one of the most important things you can do to maintain AC efficiency is to change your filter regularly. Depending on the type of filter you have, it should be changed anywhere from every few months to once a year.

By following these tips, you can help your AC run more efficiently this summer and enjoy a comfortable home all season long.
