technician working on air conditioning unitThe internet: a place where you can find information about anything, at any time. This is great for so many reasons, but unfortunately, sometimes too much information can cause problems, particularly because not all of it is actually fact. For instance, you can type in a question about any appliance in your home and receive pages of helpful tips, “hacks,” and pointers from whoever wants to give them, but it doesn’t mean those solutions will be long-lasting—or that they’re accurate to begin with.

Friday, March 2nd, 2018

Do you have leaky pipes? Were any Kitec Pipes or fixtures used in your home? If so, please call Roadrunner Air Conditioning, Heating, and Plumbing today!

What is Kitec?

Kitec Pipe ReplacementKitec pipe was used between 1995 and 2007 as an alternative to copper piping. It was marketed as a cheaper product, however, many problems with the piping surfaced, causing leaks and other types of corrosion. Currently, there are class action lawsuits against the product.

Do I Have Kitec?

Kitec pipes typically have blue (cold side) and orange (hot side) color, but other colors have Kitec. The name “Kitec” is likely to be visible on the pipe and brass fixtures. Kitec piping has plastic with an aluminum barrier. If you think your home has Kitec, call us at call Roadrunner Air Conditioning, Heating, and Plumbing to schedule an estimate!

Why Kitec is a Problem

The short answer is that they cause LEAKS! Kitec’s brass fittings corrode fast and Zinc can assemble in the pipes. Kitec piping especially corrodes fast when exposed to higher temperatures (180 degrees Fahrenheit) such as when running a boiler or water heater.
Exposure to the sun can cause the aluminum barrier to separate from the plastic causing leaks. These leaks can burst open and turn into a flood in a hurry. Because of the known problems of Kitec, selling a home with Kitec is near impossible.
